Fernando Benavides

Fernando Benavides with Jacques Cousteau

I grew up watching “The Undersea World of Jacques-Yves Cousteau” on TV and reading anything associated with his name, from books to encyclopedias. Being a scuba fan in Buenos Aires in the late 70’s and early 80’s was not the best idea. The equipment was unaffordable for middle-class people and good places to dive were far away. However, my friend Claudio and I decided to take our recreational (“first star” as it was called) scuba certification at the “Centro de Actividades Subacuáticas Buenos Aires (CASBA)” in 1983. That same year, our super hero Jacques Cousteau (and his son Jean-Michel) came to town to give a series of lectures and we followed them everywhere (almost rock star craze). This picture was taken at Buenos Aires airport; just minutes before Jacques Cousteau boarded his flight back to France. We stood speechless with our hand painted Calypso logo (by my friend Claudio), but Jacques Cousteau was absolutely charming and even autographed our copies of his books (The Silent World and The Living Sea).

Fifteen years after that magic day (and still proud member of The Cousteau Society), my work brought me to Austin, and for our first wedding anniversary in the US my wife Ida gave me a gift that changed the way I perceived inland Austin (a book called “Diving and Snorkeling Guide to Texas”). So, after several years of skin diving and snorkeling with my “old school” wetsuit, I started to think about doing the Open Water PADI certification. One uneventful Saturday morning I was driving down William Cannon Dr. when I saw the dive flag of the Scubaland south store, and the rest is (fortunate) history.

Fernando’s open water SCUBA instructor was Chris Brame.

Harry Ullmann

Harry Ullmann scubaland

Congratulations to Harry Ullmann, Scubaland’s newest Divemaster!

Jack Ryan was Harry’s Divemaster Instructor. Harry was originally certified in 1970. As Harry tells it…

“In August of 2008 my Dad was taking us on a cruise which included a stop in Roatan. I couldn't pass up an opportunity to make a dive there, so I figured I'd best brush up on my diving skills as it had been about thirty years since I had done any real diving. Once I got started again, I couldn't stop. I shopped around all over Austin for dive shops while I was trying to select where I wanted to re-certify and buy new gear. Scubaland carried the gear I was most interested in (I've always been a Scubapro bigot.) and the people there made me feel at home. John Lindsey at the Lake store was very interested in my museum pieces I still had from 1975 (see photo) and made me an offer I couldn't refuse. Now that I have completed my Divemaster certification, I'm most interested in just diving. I want to help out with classes as much as my schedule allows and I'm still continuing my diving education. I've got to finish up a navigation dive to complete the requirements for Master SCUBA Diver and I have a Public Safety Diver class scheduled in June. I'm also looking forward to a trip to the Flower Gardens in July.”

Troop 454 Takes the Plunge

Troop 454 takes the plunge

After three weekends of swimming studying, testing, and diving, 17 scouts from troop 454 have joined the ranks as the newest PADI Open Water Divers.

The guys from Troop 454 got their start on April 10th at Scubaland North and finished up with checkout dives at both the Comal River and Aquarena Springs in San Marcos. By the 25th of April we had 17 new divers ready to go dive Florida’s east coast.

The guys from troop 454 did a fantastic job through all portions of the course and are well prepared for their trip to Florida this summer.

For all their great work and enthusiasm for diving we have named the guys from troop 454 and most importantly the moms and dads of the guys from Troop 454 as our students of the month.

Lee Chastain, Scout Leader has this to say…

Positive feedback all around. The troop can and should enforce the BSA "suggestion" that the swimming merit badge comes before the scuba merit badge. Swimming MB is a requirement but the order is the suggested part. Tell your future scouts that I recommend completing the swimming portion of the swimming merit badge first.

Great results for the first SCUBA merit badge:

  • 17 certified divers
  • 6 merit badges awarded
  • 8 in progress
  • 7 earning swimming merit badge
  • 1 to complete CPR training
  • 2 scouts scheduled for certification in May
  • 1 scout ready to be the next generation

WAY TO GO GUYS!!!

Megan Klein

megan_klein_scubaland

This June Megan is headed to the Rea Sea and wanted to make sure she got certified before her trip.  She chose to get certified with Scubaland because of the number of scheduling options.

Megan was very excited she had a small class and she said that the group really clicked. “Trey and Mike were great instructors and everyone at Scubaland was super nice”, Megan said.

After her certification dives she dove with our dive club in our Annual Spring Fling and won herself a regulator.

Congratulations Megan!
