What does PADI have to say about the Advanced / Adventures in Diving course?
I just finished my Open Water class, shouldn't I get more dives before the Advanced Open Water class?
No, you do not need more dives before the Advanced Open Water class. This class is designed to be taken after you finish your Open Water class. Don't be intimidated by the name of the class. We like to say it's the Open Water Part II class. It's everything we would love to show you in the Open Water class but just do not have enough time.
I took my Open Water class 5 years ago and have many dives. Why would I need to take this class...I already know it all.
You just may surprise yourself! We have many divers in your situation taking the Advanced Open Water class. They all come back and tell us they learned something over the weekend and had a great time meeting new dive buddies.
Also, some resorts are requiring an Advanced certification before they will take you on some dives. You don't want to miss out on some great dives on your vacation! We also recommend the Advanced Open Water class before you take a Flower Gardens trip. You will be doing deep and night dives at the Flower Gardens in addition to diving in currents. The Advanced Open Water class will help prepare you for some great Caribbean diving in our backyard!
Where are the Open Water training dives done?
The Open Water checkout dives are done at Windy Point Park on Lake Travis.
Windy Point Park (also known as Barstow's) has a great setup for divers,
including an air fill station.
What is the diving in Lake Travis like?
Lake Travis is one of the best inland lakes for SCUBA training in the
country. The visibility can reach 25 feet or so at times, and is typically 10-15
feet. While this isn't Caribbean diving, it is generally warm enough to dive
without a wetsuit from June until October.
Are there other places to dive around Austin?
There are lots of other diving opportunities locally,
like Aquarena Springs (with special training), the San Marcos and Comal Rivers,
and Canyon Lake. A little bit further and you'll find Lake Amistad, offshore oil
platforms in the Gulf of Mexico, and the amazing Flower Gardens Banks National Marine Sanctuary. Austin divers also tend to
think of Cozumel, Mexico as local.
